GRIMWADE HOUSE by McGLASHAN AND EVERIST TOUR (SOLD OUT)
About
DOCOMOMO Australia offers a viewing of one of Victoria's most celebrated modern houses, the Grimwade House, designed by McGlashan and Everist in 1960-1962. Registered on the VHR and awarded the RVIA Victorian Medal in 1963, the house was a turning point for the firm and it led directly to a series of significant projects . Notably upon experiencing the Grimwade house, John and Sunday Reed commissioned their own beach house at Aspendale which was to be a trial for Heide II. Designed as a courtyard house that has been 'taken apart', Philip Goad has noted its significance: "It would not be until 1960, and the appearance of [the Grimwade house]... that Australian domestic architecture was designed on a scale that, at first glance, suggests comparable parallels with the work of Neutra and before him Mies." Still owned by the original family, the house has never before been open to the public. This is a rare opportunity to see a modern house in original condition, and it includes fixtures and furniture specifically designed for the house. The house is located in Rye and visitors are required to provide their own transport to the site.
