Panel Discussion - Does the ACT need an Aquatic Strategy?
About
The planning and management of Canberra’s aquatic facilities is not fit-for-purpose for our current population or future generations. Decisions on our aquatic facilities are ad-hoc, facilities are neglected, and where there is any consultation at all, users are not listened to.If the ACT government continues down this road, Canberra and Canberrans will pay the price. Being able to swim, and enjoy the water in whatever sporting or leisure capacity, is a fundamental underpinning of the Australian way of life. Without modern facilities, accessible by all, children and adults will not learn to swim, adults will have fewer options for keeping fit, families will have fewer options for recreation, the elderly will lose an important option for low-impact exercise and we may lose talented athletes to States that offer state of the art training facilities. Every Canberran should have easy access to an aquatic facility that meets their needs. To make this real, we want the ACT Government to work with Canberra swimmers and the broader aquatic community to create a 10-year aquatic strategy for the ACT. This panel discussion will give all Canberrans an opportunity to debate whether an ACT Aquatic Strategy is needed and how it may be achieved.
