In-Conversation with Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya
About
On Thursday 6 November, join ASPI for a discussion with Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, Belarusian democracy advocate who leads a government-elect from exile. Ms Tsikhanouskaya is Head of the United Transition Cabinet and President-elect of Belarus, who independent observers agree won the presidential election on August 9, 2020, against the long-lasting dictator Aliaksandr Lukashenka.ASPI's Executive Director, Justin Bassi, will host Sviatlana for a fireside conversation on the realities of sustaining political resistance and civil society under extreme repression. The event will explore regional security dynamics, the plight of political prisoners and how underground civil networks continue to fight for democratic freedoms when traditional institutions are dismantled or silenced.
The conversation will also consider how Belarus's experience fits into a wider global pattern, linking the repression faced by Belarusian activists to Russia’s war against Ukraine and the growing authoritarian coordination that threatens democratic resilience worldwide.
At a time when civic space is shrinking and the cost of dissent remains dangerously high, Sviatlana will shed light on what it means to continue the struggle for freedom under repression and what international partners can do to support it.
