ECU Queer Histories: Archive Collections Day
About
Join ECU for our Queer Archive Collections Day to honour Pride Month, and the end of our time on ECU Mount Lawley campus.
With a history spanning more than a century, Edith Cowan University (ECU) and its predecessor institutions have played a vital role in shaping education and community in Western Australia.
However, there remains a gap in how LGBTIQA+ experiences are formally recognised in tertiary education, leaving queer histories underrepresented, overlooked, and at risk of being lost to time.
To launch the ECU Queer Archiving Project, supported by WestPride Archives, ECU is hosting a queer archive collections day. We will be collecting items that represent all ECU campuses and predecessor institutions, including the WA Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), capturing stories of queer life across generations.
Everyone is invited to play a role in preserving ECU’s queer history, including family members and friends who may wish to contribute materials or memories on behalf of loved ones who are no longer with us.
Contributions we are seeking include, but are not limited to:
• Photographs, posters, or flyers from campus events, protests, or social groups
• T-shirts, badges, banners, costumes or programs
• Books, zines, or magazines connected to ECU initiatives or experiences
• Publications, or creative works produced through study or research
• Student films, artworks, or digital projects
• Everyday items, photos or mementos reflecting queer life, whether individuals were openly LGBTIQA+ during their time at ECU or not
We’ll also have a selection of LGBTIQA+ items and photographs on display at the event, and we warmly invite students, staff, alumni and the wider community to come and view these pieces and take a final wander through the Mount Lawley Campus grounds before we move to the City Campus for semester 1, 2026.
Digital submissions are welcome year-round via equity@ecu.edu.au
