Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya is the President-elect of Belarus and Head of the United ransitional Cabinet, internationally recognized as the legitimate representative of the Belarusian people following the rigged 2020 presidential election.After dictator Lukashenka's regime stole her victory, Tsikhanouskaya united Belarusians in the largest peaceful protest movement in the country's history. Her leadership has earned her global recognition as a symbol of peaceful resistance and democratic resilience.
Since 2020, she has been meeting with world leaders, including President Emmanuel Macron, President Ursula von der Leyen, Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and President Maia Sandu.
She also established democratic governance institutions in exile - the United Transitional Cabinet and the Coordination Council - which coordinate Belarus's democratic movement, both inside Belarus and abroad. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and the Belarusian democratic movement strongly support Ukraine and advocate for a European future for Belarus.
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya was never a professional politician but stepped forward when her husband, a blogger and activist, was arrested in May 2020. She describes herself as an "accidental politician". Her husband was released in June 2025, thanks to the efforts of President Trump, after five years of torture and solitary confinement.
Tsikhanouskaya's work has been recognized with prestigious international awards,
the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, the International Four Freedoms Award, the Charlemagne Prize, and the Lantos Human Rights Prize. She was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021 and 2022 and was named among Bloomberg's Top 50 Most Influential People and Politico's Top 28 Europeans.
