Utilising Artificial Intelligence in Clinical Practice
About
Dr. David Camfield is a Clinical Psychologist with 8 years of experience in private practice and public mental health. He is a member of the Australian Psychological Society (APS) and its Clinical College, as well as a board-approved supervisor. Before transitioning into clinical work, Dr. Camfield obtained a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience and Personality Psychology, followed by post-doctoral research in psychopharmacology and biological psychiatry. As an early adopter of AI in clinical practice, Dr. Camfield has recognised its potential to enhance both training for psychologists and treatment outcomes for clients. However, he strongly advocates for psychologists to be central to the development and application of AI in mental health, ensuring that the technology serves the nuanced needs of the profession, rather than being shaped by “big tech.” This vision led to the founding of Australasian Society for Artificial Intelligence in Mental Health Ltd., with the goal of ensuring mental health professionals have a critical voice in the future of AI in mental health
This presentation will provide an introduction to the varied uses of AI in clinical practice, and is suitable for psychologists and other mental health professionals. The use of AI scribe technology has been adopted by a growing number of clinicians over the past 12-months, and is often framed as a way to increase productivity or reduce administrative burden. However, Dr Camfield will present a more compelling perspective on the use of this new technology; primarily that when AI technology is utilized to it's full potential it can effectively enhance the delivery of clinical interventions, improve the quality of clinical supervision and reflective practice as well as the depth of engagement when in the room with our clients.
