Planetary Health: What it is and Why it Matters
About
By Distinguished Professor Tracy Levett-Jones, University of SydneyPlanetary health emphasises the deep interconnections between nature and humans as well as the need for sustainable practices that protect the health of the planet and current and future generations. Climate change, deforestation, biodiversity loss and pollution are significant disruptors of planetary health and described as the most pressing issues facing health and humanity today. As a result, the World Health Organization has called for urgent action to address three key objectives: promoting actions that both reduce carbon emissions and improve health, building more climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable healthcare systems and protecting health from the wide range of impacts of climate change.
Nurses and midwives are at the forefront of this call to action because they form the largest group of healthcare professionals and must be enabled to respond effectively to these urgent concerns. This presentation will explore how the Planetary Health Collaborative for Nurses and Midwives is addressing these challenges. Selected research and education initiatives will be used to illustrate how the Collaborative is enhancing the capacity of nurses and midwives to steward healthcare towards a more sustainable future.
