She Composes - Rachel Liu and Wendy Chen in Recital
About
She Composes follows the changing voice of women in music from the Romantic era to modern life. In the nineteenth century, Fanny Mendelssohn and Clara Schumann gave musical shape to deeply personal emotions through poetry written by others, turning private reflection into art. Later in the same century, Pauline Viardot brought the female voice into public space as both performer and composer, bridging feeling and expression on the stage. During the mid-twentieth century, Madeleine Dring used humour and self-awareness to explore the modern woman’s perspective. In the twenty-first century, Katy Abbott continues this evolution in The Domestic Sublime, finding meaning in the small rituals of daily life and elevating them to art. The program concludes with a collection of Chinese art songs, where two young women reimagine cultural memory through their own voices, expressing identity, connection, and a sense of belonging across time and place.Date
