The impact of the 'manosphere' on educators - FREE session
About
This FREE session will be presented by Dr Stephanie Wescott, a leading researcher and expert in the impacts of the manosphere in Australian contexts, and will be designed for audience interaction and questions to support teachers working with children and young people. In recent years, online communities known collectively as the manosphere have gained significant traction among young people—especially boys and young men. These spaces, which range from self-help forums to extremist influencers, often promote polarised views on gender, masculinity, and power. Increasingly, their language and attitudes are surfacing in classroom discussions, peer interactions, and student worldviews.
This session will help educators recognise how manosphere content circulates online and how it shapes students’ thinking and behaviour. We’ll explore strategies for responding constructively to misogynistic or exclusionary comments, supporting students in developing critical media literacy, and fostering inclusive classroom cultures. By understanding these online influences, teachers can better equip all students to question harmful narratives and engage in respectful, informed dialogue.
This information session is being provided as part of the 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence events offered by Greater Shepparton City Council and Goulburn Integrated Family Violence Services Executive. It can be offered free to the community
thanks to funding received by Greater Shepparton City Council for the Free from Violence Local Government Program (Victorian State Government).
