Small Animal Remedial Massage Course

Hands-On, Practical Training | Melbourne Animal Physiotherapy

Join us for an immersive, hands-on day exploring the world of small animal remedial massage at Melbourne Animal Physiotherapy (MAP).

Our courses are held in small groups of a maximum of 12 participants at our beautifully renovated animal rehabilitation clinic in Kensington, just five minutes from Melbourne's CBD.

Designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to canine remedial massage, this practical, face-to-face course combines essential theoretical knowledge with valuable hands-on experience working with live canine patients.

What You'll Learn

Throughout the day, you'll develop an understanding of:

  • Canine anatomy and biomechanics: Understanding the musculoskeletal system, major muscle groups and their role in movement.

  • Common conditions and pathologies: Recognising common orthopaedic, neurological and musculoskeletal conditions that may benefit from massage therapy.

  • Principles and benefits of remedial massage: Exploring how massage can support comfort, mobility, muscle function and rehabilitation.

  • Massage techniques: Learning and practising a range of soft tissue techniques, including effleurage, petrissage and targeted muscle massage.

  • Patient assessment and observation: Identifying areas of muscle tension, discomfort, restriction and altered movement.

  • Safe handling and positioning: Understanding canine body language, patient comfort and appropriate handling techniques.

  • Indications and contraindications: Recognising when massage may be beneficial and when treatment should be modified, avoided or referred to a veterinary professional.

  • Treatment planning: Understanding how to select and adapt massage techniques according to the individual animal's needs.

Practical, Hands-On Experience

A key feature of our course is the opportunity to practise massage techniques directly on live canine patients, under the guidance of experienced animal rehabilitation therapists.

You'll learn how to identify important anatomical landmarks, palpate muscles and soft tissues, and apply a variety of remedial massage techniques safely and effectively.

Our small-group format ensures plenty of opportunities to ask questions, receive individual feedback and develop confidence in your practical skills.

Who Can Attend?

No prerequisites are required!

Our course welcomes anyone with an interest in small animal massage and rehabilitation, including physiotherapists, veterinary professionals, animal care workers, students, dog owners and those considering a career working with animals.

Whether you're looking to expand your professional knowledge, better understand your own dog's musculoskeletal health or explore a new career direction, this course provides a valuable introduction to canine remedial massage.
