Autism rarely occurs in isolation. Many autistic individuals experience co-occurring conditions, ranging from mental health challenges like anxiety and depression, to physical differences such as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome or gastrointestinal issues, low muscle tone and hypermobility, that shape daily life.
This workshop offers parents and carers an evidence-based, neuro-affirming framework for understanding the complex interplay between the body, brain, and environment in autistic children and teens. You’ll gain insight into how these factors interact, and learn practical strategies to support wellbeing holistically.
What You’ll Learn
🌟 Unpacking Co-Occurring Conditions in Autism
Explore the prevalence and impact of conditions commonly seen alongside autism, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, gastrointestinal challenges, and ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder). Learn how to approach these challenges with evidence-based, neuro-affirming understanding.
🌟 Sleep and Sensory Processing Challenges
Understand how sensory sensitivities, pain, and neurological differences affect sleep and daily functioning. Learn practical strategies to improve sleep quality and create calm, supportive environments.
🌟 Eating and Nutritional Considerations (Including ARFID)
Examine how sensory sensitivities, gastrointestinal issues, and restricted eating patterns interact. Gain guidance on supporting nutrition in ways that respect neurodivergent sensory profiles and behavioural differences.
🌟 Mental Health Across the Spectrum
Review the high prevalence of anxiety, depression, and mood dysregulation in autistic individuals. Learn strategies for early identification, supportive interventions, and collaborative mental health care that affirms autistic experiences.
🌟 Holistic, Neuro-Affirming Supports
Discover approaches that integrate physical health, mental wellbeing, and sensory needs. Topics include adaptations for Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, executive functioning support, and creating environments that reduce stress while enhancing autonomy and self-efficacy.
