Precursors to Modernism - lunchtime talk
About
What’s happening in the 1920–50 architectural zeitgeist? It is claimed that there was a ‘trend of the interwar period towards the subtle or minimal decoration as a precursor to Modernism’ in reference to the Federal Capital Commission’s (FCC) housing for Canberra.
Apart from being designed prior to the 1950s how do Canberra’s FCC dwellings show elements towards Modernism. What led to these major shifts and changes in style, materials and even construction? And what was the result?
Our speaker, Eric Martin AM, has practised architecture in Victoria, NSW and the ACT both with government and in private practice. Eric is recognised nationally and internationally for his expertise in conservation of heritage structures, adaptive reuse and accessibility.
