The United Nations recommended in November 1947 that the British Mandate for Palestine should be divided into two independent states - one Jewish and the other Arab. The Jewish one, called Israel, had to fight the War of Independence in 1948 – 1949 to survive. One of its consequences was the creation of the so-called Palestinian refugee problem. Subsequently, the 1967 Six Day War led to the conquest of many territories which has still not been resolved. The 1973 Yom Kippur War caught Israel off guard, as was to happen again on October 7, 2023. And the Lebanon Wars of 1982 and 2006 caused Israel to engage in battles without clear victories.
This four-part lecture series will try to explain the background to these battles, what actually took place and most importantly, what were the consequences. This will be based on, as far as possible, a non-partisan, historical approach to these events.
There will be plenty of time for constructive discussion and a written summary will be provided.
