SoLA Maths Professional Learning
Maths Fact Fluency Masterclass - Friday 20th March, 2026
How to use Fact Fluency to strengthen Numeracy Instruction
MATHS FACT FLUENCY
In this one-day workshop, Dr Brian Poncy will show you how to fire up maths fact fluency, light up students' love of maths, and increase school-wide maths achievement. He will present the evidence base to support teaching fact fluency, discuss studies evaluating the effectiveness of fact fluency instruction in lifting numeracy outcomes and provide classroom-ready materials and implementation guidance.
Participants will leave the workshop with resources and practices to:
- Establish a scope and sequence of measurable and alterable critical math skills
- Implement a brief & intensive school wide intervention to increase core math skills
- Match assessment and intervention response data to provide tiered support to students
- Select, implement, evaluate interventions for both individual and groups of students
- Use the Facts on Fire Program to Increase Student Engagement & Motivation
- Evaluate any fluency resource in the context of research findings
Although relevant theory will be discussed, the bulk of the workshop will revolve around providing teachers with actionable resources they can take back to their classrooms to support assessment and instruction that leads to demonstrable student learning.
ABOUT THE PRESENTERDr Brian Poncy is a Professor of School Psychology at Oklahoma State University. His research focuses on academic interventions and behavioural principles of learning, specifically in the area of mathematics. Dr Poncy created the Measures & Interventions for Numeracy Development (M.I.N.D.), a set of free materials to support teachers in the assessment and implementation of empirically-validated interventions to increase early numeracy and computation skills (www.factsonfire.com). He is a co-author of Effective Math Interventions: A Guide to Improving Whole-Number Knowledge. SoLA Explicit Maths Conference - Saturday 21st March, 2026
Supercharge mathematics instruction with leading educators
THE FIRST NSW CONFERENCE ON EXPLICIT MATHS!
With a majority of schools working to implement explicit mathematics instruction in NSW, we have invited educators and policy leaders with deep expertise in both maths content and pedagogy informed by cognitive science to our first-of-its-kind conference. Only research validated practices will be discussed, giving participants confidence to implement and support high quality mathematics practices at their schools. The breakout session will include 3 streams: Policy, Research and Practice while keynote presentations will offer insight into effective implementation from at the system, school and classroom levels.
