Working with Parents and Infants After a NICU Stay
About
Babies and their family who have been admitted to neonatal intensive care have very different experiences in comparison to their peers. This presentation will talk about what a NICU journey may look like for babies and families drawing on an Infant Mental Health and psychological perspective. It will also provide insights into what challenges may be faced after discharge.Dr Megan Chapman is a clinical psychologist who has worked across a variety of settings. She was the coordinator of the Infant Mental Health Program at The Royal Children's Hospital from 2008 to 2025, and moved to The Women's in 2025 as the Infant Mental Health specialist attached to the First 1000 Days Program. Megan works privately through Buckley Consulting Group in Essendon, focussing on seeing very young children and their families who have experienced a NICU journey. Megan's PhD research looked at Parental Reflective Functioning in Neonatal Intensive Care, and its impact on the parent-infant relationships and mental health outcomes of parents and babies.
