Using Picture Books to Teach EAL/D
About
Using Picture Books to Teach EAL/D: Seminar Synopsis (Reduced Version)This seminar equips participants with evidence-based strategies for selecting and teaching picture books that support both English language development and curriculum learning across Science, HASS, and The Arts. It addresses a key challenge: EAL/D students must build language and learn content simultaneously, and picture books provide the visual scaffolding, manageable text load, and accessible entry points that make this possible.
Participants learn to analyse picture books using NT EAL/D progression indicators and ACARA phases, distinguishing between independent and scaffolded-support levels. The session introduces a before/during/after framework to manage cognitive load through vocabulary preparation, schema activation, text chunking, and structured participation.
Cultural responsiveness is explored through Bishop’s mirrors, windows, and doors framework, with emphasis on translanguaging and valuing students’ full linguistic repertoires. Differentiation strategies show how one picture book can be used effectively across Beginning, Developing, and Consolidating phases with appropriate scaffolding.
Participants also receive practical tools—analysis frameworks, selection checklists, planning templates, and quick-reference guides—providing a clear foundation for using ATESOL NT’s analysed book lists and for teaching picture books in ways that strengthen both language and content learning.
