The Importance of Being Earnest
About
The Importance of Being Earnest follows two young men, Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, who each lead double lives to escape Victorian social expectations. Jack masquerades as “Ernest” in the city; Algernon invents a fake friend named “Bunbury” to avoid obligations.Complications arise when both men propose to women who insist they could only love someone named Ernest. Mistaken identities, farcical engagements, formidable relatives, and absurd social rules collide until the truth of Jack’s past is revealed, along with his real name.
A sharp satire of status, romance, and respectability, Wilde’s comedy remains brilliantly funny and surprisingly modern.
