David Griffiths' program notes:
Alexander Zemlinsky’s lyrical trio—admired so deeply by Brahms that he personally recommended it to his publisher—holds a special place in our repertoire. Though we have recorded its radiant beauty, we rarely perform it, and this program offers the perfect opportunity to revisit the work with fresh perspective. Complementing it is an exciting new commission: a brand-new trio by Stuart Greenbaum, whose music for clarinet and piano we recorded to great acclaim. Inspired by that collaboration, we invited him to create a trio especially for us, which we will premiere next year. We will complete the program with selected duos and other delightful gems.
