About
This is a homeschool group booking for a day at the Adelaide Botanic Garden, experiencing the Slingsby Theatre triptych package 'A Concise Compendium of Wonder'.These shows are aimed at audiences 8+ years.
'A triptych. Three timely tales. One epic journey.
Step inside The Wandering Hall of Possibility to discover a trio of imaginative worlds, each containing a timely and timeless tale. Three new stories, inspired by classic fairytales, intertwine to form an unforgettable triptych.
Immerse yourself in an epic journey through the complete collection — all bound in one evolving wooden building that continually reveals new surprises.
Using Slingsby’s internationally renowned theatre techniques — shadow, light-play, miniatures, and original music — this magical theatre experience will transport you through time and space on a voyage that explores humanity’s shifting relationship with nature.'
Each ticket includes a seat for ALL THREE of the below shows.
10am: 'Childhood of the World'
By Jennifer Mills / Inspired by the Brothers Grimm’s Hansel and Gretel
'Allow internationally renowned theatre company Slingsby to lead you, by flickering candlelight, deep into the past - where you are immersed in cinematic sound design, lush original music, and spectacular lighting that transport you to a mysterious time when the forest was our home.'
12:30pm: 'The Giant's Garden'
Ursula Dubosarsky’s reimagining of Oscar Wilde’s The Selfish Giant.
'Conjured through age-old theatre tricks and Slingsby’s internationally celebrated signature shadow play, intricate worlds are revealed, where immensity meets the minuscule, darkness finds light, and the unseen becomes visible.'
3:30pm: 'The Tree of Light'
By Ceridwen Dovey / A radical reimagining of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Match Girl.
'Multi-award-winning theatre company Slingsby welcomes you to a colony on the moon. Through mirrored surfaces, inventive lighting, and theatrical magic, be transported into a bold, futuristic new world of outer space before being gently returned to Earth.'
Each of the above productions will run for 60 minutes. In between shows, we are free to picnic and explore the Botanic Gardens, or leave and come back as you wish. To enhance your triptych experience, self-guided extension activities — inspired by each production — are available between performances. These activities encourage you to engage your imagination and senses more deeply as you pause and reflect, exploring connections between the stories and the living landscape of the Adelaide Botanic Garden.
Students are welcome to attend without an accompanying parent, however please arrange prior for an attending adult to supervise your young person.
