Writing for Wellbeing: Beginning with Light
About
Writing for Wellbeing is an eight-workshop community arts project supported by Port Macquarie–Hastings Council through a Community Grant. The project includes four community writing workshops at Port Macquarie Library and four artist-focused workshops at Roto House, with writings from all workshops forming part of a public exhibition in June or July. The Library workshops are open to people of all backgrounds and experience, inviting participants to explore writing as a gentle, playful practice of wellbeing. Through guided prompts, body-aware exercises, and moments of reflection, participants engage with imagination, curiosity, personal stories, and small moments of wonder. The emphasis is on presence, creativity, and the nourishing aspects of writing rather than “good writing.”
The four sessions are:
* Beginning with Light, noticing moments of reflection and curiosity
* Writing the Shadow: Making Space for What Is Difficult, exploring challenging experiences with care
* Seeing with New Eyes: Writing Toward Integration, discovering fresh perspectives and connections
* Going Forward: Writing as an Ongoing Practice of Wellbeing, reflecting on the series and supporting continued creative practice.
Section one: Beginning with Light
This workshop offers a gentle introduction to writing as a practice of wellbeing and reflection. Through a playful and curious approach, participants explore experiences such as love, beauty, gratitude, and other moments that arise, with light as a guiding metaphor for reflection and insight.
A series of short writing exercises invites participants to engage in body-based, whole-body writing, drawing on felt sense, imagination, memories, and stories, as well as connection with the natural world. These practices support creativity and awareness to unfold naturally, without pressure or expectation.
The workshop includes a sharing section where participants come together to listen to one another’s writing, practicing deep listening and respecting each person’s voice.
This session is suitable for all levels of writing experience and offers a calm, nourishing space to slow down, reflect, and engage with writing as a practice of care, presence, and wellbeing.
A $10 contribution for catering is requested for each session.
