Advanced Tube Feeding and Rehydration
About
This advanced course builds on foundational tube-feeding skills and is designed for experienced volunteers managing complex or high-risk wildlife patients at Darling Range Wildlife Shelter. The training focuses on advanced hydration calculations, staged rehydration protocols, and species-specific feeding considerations across birds, reptiles, and waterbirds.Participants will develop a deeper understanding of when to commence feeding, how hydration status influences feeding success, and how to safely manage challenging cases including waterbirds, parrots during prolonged weaning, bobtails, and compromised or unstable patients. The course covers advanced decision-making, accurate documentation and handover, multi-person tubing techniques, and the identification and management of serious complications such as aspiration, crop stasis, crop burn, perforation, and open-mouth breathing.
This course emphasises critical thinking, risk assessment, and adherence to DRWS best-practice standards, preparing participants to confidently support hospital leads and coordinators in advanced intragavage feeding and rehydration scenarios.
