This year marks the 50th anniversary of the introduction of demical currency into Australia. Our new and distinctive coinage owed much to design work of Stuart Devlin. He was born on 9 October 1931 in Geelong and lived until 2018. He was an internationally acclaimed metalworker, goldsmith, and designer, famous for creating Australia's first decimal coinage, the Sydney 2000 Olympic medals, and intricate decorative items like his iconic surprise eggs, blending traditional techniques with innovative textures and designs for coins, jewelry, and even surgical instruments for over 30 countries. Appointed Her Majesty's Goldsmith and Jeweller in 1982, he was a versatile artist known for his detailed filigree, silver-gilt work, and functional art, including university maces and furniture
