IShTaM Pongal 2026
About
Pongal is a traditional harvest festival celebrated by Tamil communities, mainly in Tamil Nadu, during mid-January. It marks the beginning of the Tamil month Thai and is a time to thank nature, farmers, the Sun God, and cattle for a successful harvest. The festival is named after the dish “Pongal,” made from newly harvested rice, milk, and jaggery, symbolising prosperity and abundance.Pongal is celebrated over four days—Bhogi, Thai Pongal, Mattu Pongal, and Kaanum Pongal—each with its own significance. People decorate their homes with colourful kolams, wear new clothes, and gather with family and friends. The festival reflects gratitude, cultural pride, and harmony with nature.
