WAEDOCS Inaugural Symposium

Integrative Care: Exploring the Intersection of Disorders of Gut Brain Interactions (DGBI), Neurodiversity and Eating Disorders

OVERVIEW

Disorders of the Gut Brain Interaction (DGBI), eating disorders and neurodiversity frequently overlap, yet are often addressed in isolation within clinical practice. This one-day symposium brings together experts from across Australia and WA to explore these three key themes and their intersection through an integrative care lens.
The programme will be complemented by insights from international neurogastroenterology expert Dr Trina Kellar, alongside local leaders, offering evidence based and practice informed perspectives to support contemporary clinical care.

Through presentations, lived experience perspectives and a plenary discussion, the symposium will explore how clinicians can better understand and respond to the complex interplay between gastrointestinal symptoms, neurodivergent traits and eating disorder presentations across the lifespan.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This symposium is suitable for ALL clinicians, including those working across:

•  Medical Specialities

•  Gastroenterology

•  Mental Health and Psychiatry

•  Allied health disciplines

•  GP

•  Specialist eating disorder services

Across all settings of care, including public, private, community and primary care.

Clinicians working within the Perth metropolitan area are encouraged to attend face-to-face to support professional networking and collaboration, while virtual attendance is available for those who are unable to attend in person including regional WA.

Featured speakers

Dr Trina Kellar | Neurogastroenterologist | Queensland Pelvic Floor Centre & Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital
Part 1: Eating Disorders, Disorders of Gut Brain Interaction & Motility Disorders: The Essentials
Part 2: Multidisciplinary Management of DGBI in Eating Disorders
Part 3: Q & A: Practical approaches to challenging scenarios
In this session Dr Kellar explores the intersection between eating disorders, motility disorders, and disorders of gut-brain interaction (or functional gut disorders). She will address key questions such as: what are gut-brain disorders, why are they so common in eating disorders, are ARFID and DGBI really different, and how can we ease symptoms to better support our patients in their treatment programs? With a focus on practical, interdisciplinarcare care, this session is designed to ensure all attendees - medical, nursing and allied health - understand the foundations of assessing and managing functional gut and dysmotility concerns in patients struggling with eating disorders.

Dr Sue Byrne | Senior Clinical Psychologist | WAEDOCS & Dr Jessica Dove | Senior Clinical Psychologist | NMEDSS

Screening for neurodivergent traits in individuals with eating disorders

The significant overlap between neurodivergence (particularly Autism and ADHD) and eating disorders is now well documented. Accordingly, eating disorder services are working to identify better ways of working with these individuals within our current evidence-based treatments. This presentation will focus on the rationale for, and the various ways of, screening for neurodivergent traits in individuals presenting for treatment of an eating disorder.  We see this as a first crucial step toward being able to individualize or tailor treatment for these individuals with a view to achieving an improved treatment experience and better clinical outcomes.

Jessica and Sue will discuss the process of introducing screening for neurodivergent traits in patients referred to NMEDSS and present the specific tools that we currently use for this purpose in our state-wide data collection registry (a longitudinal REDCap database).  We will go on to examine how this screening process has influenced the treatment journey at NMEDSS.

Dr Lauren Gavaghan | Consultant Psychiatrist | FSH Cockburn Health Inpatient Eating Disorder Programme
How can we make inpatient eating disorder services more PEACEful?
Eating disorder services can ofren seem to patients as a 'one siz fits all' approach. and for those with co-occurring autsm, this can create barriers to care. The Maudsley PEACE pathway (Pathway for Eating disorders and Autism developed from Clinical Experience), offers a framework for adapting inpatient environments and interventions to better meet the needs of neurodivergent patients This presentation is a reflection on how we may make inaptient eating disorder services more 'PEACEful' by embedding principles of predictability, sensory sensitivity, communication flexibility, and person-centred care. Lauren will reflect on her own experience as a consultant working in SEDU's where the team have made changes in linie with the PEACE pathway. Lauren will also include views of patients, in terms of how introducing practical strategies - ranging from environmental adaptations to tailored therapuetic approaches can reduce distress, improve engagement and ultimately enhance recovery. By recognising and responding to autism within eating disorder populations, we can move towatds more compassionate, inclusive and effective inpatient care.

Dr Maud Achard | Dietitian & Lived Experience | Private Practice & Board Member Eating Disorder Neurodiversity Australia (EDNA)

Neurodiversity and Eating Disorders: Practical Resources for Clinicians

This presentation offers a brief, practical introduction to key considerations when supporting neurodivergent people seeking eating disorders care. Rather than an in-depth training, it highlights essential shifts clinicians can make to reduce harm, increase felt safety and improve engagement across settings. The session will share immediately actionable adjustments clinicians can implement in everyday practice, and introduce clinician resources developed by Eating Disorder Neurodiversity Australia (EDNA) to support ongoing learning and service adaptation.

Gabi Alosi | Lived Experience Consultant / Educator | WAEDOCS
Lived Experience Lessons of ADHD and Eating Disorder Recovery

Join Gabi as she shares her lived experience perspective of living with ADHD, navigating eating disorder recovery, and what she wishes she had known back then when executive dysfunction and sensory sensitivity wasnt' even part of her vocabulary.

Plenary Discussion
