WA Eating Disorders Outreach and Consultation Service
Using Formulation to Navigate Complex Cases
ABOUT
This workshop is suitable for ALL clinicians
Trainer: Dr Sue Byrne | Senior Clinical Psychologist
Complex presentations are no longer rare in the eating disorders field. Co-occurring difficulties, thorny family dynamics, distorted beliefs about ‘healthy’ eating, medical complications, and shifts in our socio-cultural milieu all require us as clinicians to consider, and be sensitive to, a broad range of issues – which we’re not taught about at university or in our two-day trainings on evidence-based treatment. When faced with multiple issues, what should we prioritise?
This workshop offers us an opportunity to reflect on our practice and search for different ways of conceptualising complex cases. Dr Sue Byrne will lead this discussion and raise questions that help us reflect on our current practice. There will be a specific focus on the importance of using a personalised formulation as a dynamic “roadmap” for planning treatment. The formulation should be developed collaboratively with the patient and will evolve as the patient and therapist learn about factors have influenced the development of, and/or are maintaining, the eating disorder.
During the workshop Sue will provide case vignettes and examine these through the lenses of various formulations - treatment-specific and more general - to clarify and identify potential directions and priorities. We will discuss these together and in groups, encouraging all options, including left-of-field ideas, brave suggestions and idiosyncratic solutions as well as more conventional approaches. With no answer being the “right” one, we will consider all options for including out of the box ideas, bold suggestions and idiosyncratic solutions as well as more traditional approaches.
