About

This training supports allied health professionals to explore how self-advocacy can be meaningfully facilitated for neurodivergent children and adolescents through a neurodiversity-affirming lens.

The first four hours are designed for all allied health professionals and allied health assistants working with neurodivergent paediatric populations. This component focuses on understanding self-advocacy, recognising barriers and supports, and embedding affirming practices across therapeutic contexts.

Speech Pathologists are then invited to remain for an additional two hours of training, which will focus specifically on the communication skills, systems, and supports that enable self-advocacy, including access to AAC, language supports, and advocacy-focused intervention approaches.

This training will cover:
* How to support our neurodivergent children and adolescents to confidently assert their needs, rights, and preferences in our clinical, home and school settings.
* Understanding self-advocacy - we know we should be facilitating self-advocacy, but what is it really and how can we facilitate this as an allied health professional.
* Components of self-advocacy - Learn about the essential components of self-advocacy including knowledge of self, knowledge of rights and communication - and what is our role is in facilitating self-advocacy.
* Hierarchy towards increasing levels of self-advocacy - identifying where families and individuals are in their advocacy journey and discussing how to move from others advocating for the individual towards self-advocacy.
* What skills do we need to effectively self-advocate and how we can promote these in our supports?
* You will also receive a questionnaire to identify and set goals with clients and families

The additional 2 hours for speech pathologists, will focus on:
* What communication skills do we need to be able to successfully self-advocate and how to facilitate this in our sessions
