This lecture explores the Buddhist regions of the Himalayas, the world’s highest mountain range and the spiritual heartland of Tibetan culture. Spanning 2,000 miles from Ladakh in the west to Bhutan in the east, Zara introduces the kingdoms and principalities of Ladakh, Zanskar, Spiti, Lahaul, Nepal, Mustang, Sikkim and Bhutan, with a focus on their shared spiritual centre, Tibet.Situated along ancient trade routes linking India and Central Asia, these remote regions became important centres of Buddhist art and culture, preserving extraordinary sacred artworks in monasteries and temples.
Zara is a freelance lecturer, art consultant and curator specialising in Himalayan and Tibetan art, with extensive museum, publishing and tour-leading experience.
