ArtsNational Murray River | THE ART OF LAUGHTER
About
Comical scenes of people and animals misbehaving were a popular feature of Dutch Golden Age painting. These lively genre works depict silliness, naughtiness and laughter, often illustrating popular sayings or delivering moral lessons. At the same time, seventeenth-century doctors believed that laughter was good for one’s health — adding another layer of meaning to these playful images.Mariska Beekenkamp-Wladimiroff explores humour, behaviour and morality in Dutch Baroque art, revealing what these paintings tell us about everyday life and attitudes in the seventeenth century. Trained in art history at the Courtauld Institute of Art, Mariska is an experienced lecturer and founder of Art Historical London, delivering lectures, courses and tours internationally and online.
