Butoh Jams
About
Butoh Jams offer a shared space for movement research, exploration, and quiet experimentation. Each session begins with a facilitated opening to help the body arrive and tune into the space. From there, the room opens into an unguided jam where participants are free to explore movement in their own way, moving, resting, witnessing, or simply being present.
The jams are grounded in a Butoh sensibility: listening rather than performing, allowing movement to arise from sensation, impulse, and relationship to space. There is no set form to follow and no outcome to reach. This is a space for curiosity, for noticing what emerges when the body is given time and attention.
Live musicians or DJs will curate evolving soundscapes to support the atmosphere of exploration and presence.
These jams are open to everyone: dancers, artists, movers, and those new to Butoh. You do not need prior experience, only a willingness to listen and to move (or not move) as feels right.
Some shared agreements for the space:
• Please arrive on time to take part in the opening
• Phones off and no talking during the jam
• Move with awareness of others and the shared space
• You’re welcome to enter and exit the dance or sit and witness at any time
• Each participant is responsible for their own pace and boundaries
These jams are an ongoing practice: a place to return to, to deepen sensitivity and develop a personal relationship with movement over time. They can stand alone, or be used as a space to integrate and extend the work explored in our workshops.
Jams will be held fortnightly Feb-March
Thursday Feb 5th, 19th
Thursday March 5th, 19th
Sessions are led by members of iLiminal Butoh Collective whose practices draw from long-term training in Butoh and related movement forms, and a shared interest in dance as a site for inquiry, creativity, and lived experience.
