Welcome to Country
About
Experience a traditional Welcome to Country with a Smoking Ceremony led by an Elder of the Woi-Wurrung community. Join us to acknowledge Country, learn about cultural traditions, and celebrate connection to the land. A Smoking Ceremony consists of a small amount of native leaves being set alight. The Elder will invite you to approach the smoke and be cleansed. The Elder will provide a full explanation of the history and cultural significance of the Smoking Ceremony. For more information, please visit https://www.wurundjeri.com.au/services/cultural-practices-for-events/smoking/
For thousands of years we have employed Smoking Ceremonies to cleanse places and people of bad spirits to promote the wellbeing of our people as well as guests on Country. Contemporary smoking ceremonies may involve a Wurundjeri Elder and/ or a younger Wurundjeri community member carrying a portable tarnuk (wooden dish) containing coals and wet leaves around assembled guests.
