Ghosts of the mallee: Victoria hotel

Ghosts of the mallee: Victoria hotel

About

Step back in time and explore the dark and intriguing past of the

Victoria Hotel

in Ouyen, a town whose very name is said to derive from the Aboriginal word for "ghost waterhole". This grand heritage building, once the beating heart of a thriving Mallee community, is now an atmospheric location for a spine-chilling ghost tour.

Ouyen's Boom and Bust History

Ouyen flourished as a major Victorian railway junction and agricultural service centre, particularly between 1920 and 1929. The town boomed with the development of wheat and sheep farming, attracting many soldier settlers after WWI. The railway yards were a hive of activity, with numerous trains passing through daily, a locomotive depot, and extensive goods handling facilities. This busy period also brought challenges, including severe droughts that required water to be a daily delivery by train from Mildura. The town has seen its share of tragedies, including the intense hardships faced by settlers clearing the land, and a notable murder case in 1930 that appeared in local papers.

The Haunted Victoria Hotel

Built in 1919 and substantially enlarged in 1934, the Victoria Hotel stands as a testament to the town's ambition and resilience. The hotel is a magnificent structure with over 40 rooms (referring to the number of bedrooms in the former railway rest house, a similar large accommodation building of the era) and retains the classic atmosphere of a 1930s pub.

even non-believers report a "certain presence". Encounter stories include:

Lights turning on by themselves in a locked, unoccupied room.

Doors rattling without a breeze in a sealed hallway, spooking both staff and tourists.

The sound of phantom footsteps and handwashing in an out-of-order bathroom in the dead of night.

These occurrences often seem to happen when changes are made to the building, suggesting a spirit that prefers things the way they were. the hotel is connected to the former morgue next door, adding an extra layer of chilling history to your experience.

Join us if you dare to walk the halls where the past residents of Ouyen may still linger. Hear the stories, feel the energy,
