Double Duo
About
As the pre-eminent keyboard instrument at European Courts during 17th & 18th Centuries, the harpsichord was a symbol of sophisticated taste and luxury. The more wealthy an aristocrat, the bigger and better their harpsichord: sometimes they would even have more than one! This concert celebrates some of the extravagant compositions written for two harpsichords. In turns witty, lush, orchestral, and delicate, the pieces explore nuances and density not available when only 10 fingers are at work.
YiYun Gu and Khoi Bui will be performing this rarely-heard repertoire, duelling on a pair of double-manual instruments, both being modern copies of 18th century instruments.
Sir Thomas Beecham likened the sound of the harpsichord to that of skeletons copulating on a tin roof. We encourage you to indulge in this acoustic orgy!
Music for 2 harpsichords and Solos by JS and WF Bach, Rameau, Royer, Scarlatti and Élisabeth Claude Jacquet de La Guerre.
