Wine X Sam Masterclass: Oak in Wine
About
While the Wine X Sam winery is relatively young, their story actually dates back to 1968 — the year our winemaker Sam Plunkett was born — and when his dad Alan Plunkett planted the first vines in the Strathbogie Ranges.Sam grew up in the Strathbogie Ranges on his family’s farm and got his first real taste of wine when he worked a vintage as a cellar hand at Tisdall Wines in 1986. Since then, Sam and his wife Bron have launched many successful brands and won numerous accolades including the Great Australian Shiraz Challenge Trophy for ‘Australia’s Best Shiraz’.
But it wasn’t until 2012 when the Taresch family of Elgo Estate leased Sam space at their winery in the Strathbogie Ranges, and a number of local growers gave him some lovely fruit that Wine X Sam was born.
Join us for a Masterclass with Sam Plunkett to discuss the use of Oak in wine.
Using oak in wine develops particular flavours, texture, tannin profile and even colour. Oak’s inherent flavour compounds, such as vanilla, clove, spice and char, adds complexity to a wine’s aroma and taste. The porous nature of wood allows for a gradual oxidisation which can create a smoother, rounder finish. Plus, an oak barrel is the ideal environment for encouraging malolactic fermentation in a wine.
This event is perfect for those who love a Chardonnay or a Shiraz.
