Zema Estate Masterclass: The Benefits of Ageing Wine
About
In the autumn of 1982, Zema Estate made their first Coonawarra Shiraz in a humble tin shed, using an old milk tanker as a fermenter.Although winemaking was new, the spirit behind it was generations old. The Zema family roots stretch back to Calabria in southern Italy, where their ancestors had grown grapes and made wine since the early 1800s. When the Zema family made the journey to Australia in 1958 – they brought with them a deep love of the land, a culture steeped in tradition, and a dream; to one day own a vineyard and bottle wines under their name.
Zema Estate still hand-prune every vine, select only the best fruit, age their wines in quality French and American oak, and bottle age their wine until they are ready to share. This traditional, hands-on approach means they can produce wines that are consistently expressive of Coonawarra, regardless of seasonal fluctuations and vintage variations.
Zema Estate continues to specialise in classic Coonawarra Cabernet and Shiraz. And of course, their Italian heritage still weaves its way into everything they do. Now into their fourth decade, Zema Estate has developed into a true and trusted Coonawarra winery, forged in Australia but based on the undeniable passions, traditions and values of their Italian heritage.
Join us for a Zema Estate Masterclass at the Monk to discuss the Benefits of Ageing Wine, while comparing 2013 wines with 2021 wines.
When wines are young, we taste their primary flavors. However as wines age, other flavours develop from this process. This could mean bold and fresh fruit flavours change gradually into flavours of dried fruit. Other secondary flavours can become more prominent as a wine ages, such as honey, herbal notes, hay, mushroom, stone and earth.
This masterclass will be a truly engaging and informative evening.
