John Kelleher was employed from 1983 to 1988 in the Explosives Branch, of the Department of Labour, as a Chemist and Inspector of Explosives. His duties there included examination and testing of explosives, explosives accessories and safety procedures; inspection of magazines and storage facilities, and investigation of incidents, such as fires, relating to industrial use of explosives and other dangerous goods. He was required to present evidence in the Magistrates, Coroners, County and Supreme Courts.From 1988 to 2025 he was employed at the Victoria Police Forensic Services Centre (VPFSC). His duties there were mainly investigation of fire and explosion scenes, examination of exhibits, and presentation of evidence in various Courts. He investigated many structure fires, in industrial, commercial and residential premises, and grassfires, bushfires and wildfires generally and examined many items, collected from those and from other fire scenes.
