Camels in the Southern Highlands?
About
Yes! And you will have the opportunity of meeting them and learning all about their contributions to regenerative farming at our next event.Surprisingly, camels have proven to be an asset for weed control and for co-grazing with cattle. For many years, Wayne Deeth, at Elouera Vale Farm in MIttagong, had been breeding and selling camels to other farmers, especially those in the Southern Highlands.
At Elouera Vale the camels had been successfully grazing with Belted Galloway cattle. It is a beautiful, well maintained property - a mixture of improved pasture and pretty woodland with the Chain of Ponds creek running through it. There is good access to the property, which also contains features and artworks that espouse the repurposing and recycling of materials. And their beehives have produced award-winning honey.
As well as Wayne's knowledgeable and entertaining talk on the history and uses of camels in Australia, we will be able to taste some camel milk products and meet the camels. There will also be drinks and snacks available for purchase on the day.
