16th Rex Cramphorn Memorial Lecture
About
“DON’T ADAPT A SINGLE WORD”(GATZ, THE GREAT GATSBY, AND THE CASE FOR RADICAL COMMITMENT)
Lecture by JOHN COLLINS, artistic director of New York’s Elevator Repair Service.
Presented by Theatre and Performance Studies, The University of Sydney.
When New York’s Elevator Repair Service theatre company decided they would adapt The Great Gatsby into a play, they found that the best way to put this novel on stage was to not adapt it at all. For the 16th Rex Cramphorn Memorial Lecture, director and company founder John Collins explains the company’s approach to their award-winning production, Gatz, which delivers every word of Fitzgerald’s masterpiece over the course of a 6-hour performance.
Gatz was performed at the Sydney Opera House in 2009 and returns to Australia in March 2026 for the Adelaide Festival. John’s presentation of the 16th Rex Cramphorn Memorial Lecture is by exclusive arrangement with the Adelaide Festival.
Refreshments will be served after the lecture.
