Working With Interpreters
About
In term 1, Inner East Student Support Services (SSS) will facilitate a professional learning session for Inner East schools, with a focus on working effectively with interpreters. All Inner East primary, secondary and specialist school staff are invited to attend. Space is limited so we request a maximum of 2 staff members per school. The session will be co-presented by Sabrina Chung and Kyla Fareeha, SSS speech pathologists, and Stephen Yau, SSS psychologist. Together, they will explore how to build trust and genuine connections when working with students and families who speak languages other than English. The session will also highlight what staff can expect during an interpreted meeting, including:
• debriefing interpreters,
• pacing,
• turn-taking,
• navigating communication breakdowns and
• how interpreters support meaning rather than word-for-word translation.
School staff will have the opportunity to reflect on their current practices and time will be allocated for questions and discussion during the session.
