Hot Dipped Galvanized Steel Reinforcement
The need to incorporate durability into design, construction, and maintenance to prevent the premature deterioration of concrete structures is well recognised. It is also increasingly becoming important to consider the life-cycle environmental burden of a structure.
This presentation describes the benefits of using HDG steel reinforcement to increase the durability of steel reinforced concrete structures and shows how these benefits may be quantified using conventional industry models.
------------------------
At the end of this presentation attendees will learn about:
● Understand the corrosion mechanisms for black steel reinforcement in concrete, including carbonation and chloride induced corrosion.
● Understand why galvanized steel reinforcement is immune to the effects of carbonation and why the time to corrosion initiation of galvanized reinforcement by chloride attack is significantly delayed over black steel.
● Quantify the project specific time to corrosion initiation for black and galvanized steel reinforcement using an industry accepted chloride diffusion model available from the GAA
● Understand how the Global Warming Potential of a steel reinforced concrete structure may be quantified through Environmental Product Declaration data, and how it may be reduced using galvanized reinforcement.
● Specify HDG reinforcement and access relevant technical literature.
