About the event & activities
You will be supporting the efforts of landcare groups and volunteers to enhance the local environment at the Oxley Creek Common in Brisbane's south. The Common is a 120 hectare parkland is a low-lying floodplain and wetland system, which is a unique and ecologically significant part of the Oxley Creek catchment. Activities are likely to include removing invasive weed species to enable natural regeneration of native plant species, maintenance of planting sites including mulching and watering seedlings, and litter collection.
Historically a riparian rainforest with alluvial plains, the Common was used for logging, family cattle farms, and a agricultural research station, The landuse of this area exacerbated the impact of flooding events, causing significant landslips and erosion during flooding events. In 2003 the site was opened to the public as the Oxley Creek Common, and since then Bushcare volunteers have worked diligently to restore parts of the creek bank to a native and natural habitat.
No experience necessary!
Experienced Landcare members will provide a safety briefing and toolbox talk and support you throughout the day with each task. Event support members will provide information on best-practice planting methods, weed identification, plus share their local environmental knowledge.
This activity requires a moderate to high level of physical activity, however please contact us if you have any concerns as we can often modify things to ensure all your team can participate.
