Raising Resilient Teens: Money, Stress & Student Voice
About
Parenting a teenager can feel like a constant balancing act — supporting their independence while staying connected through the challenges they face. This JCCA P&C Conversation Series session brings together student voice, practical expertise, and school leadership to support families navigating the senior school years. The evening will feature our Year 12 Student Councillors, sharing insights into what matters most to students right now, followed by a practical and engaging session with P&C representative Lacey Filipich on building financial wellbeing in teens — even when money conversations feel awkward or communication is minimal. We’ll also hear from Fiona Tholet, JCCA Associate Principal of Learning and Growth, who will share strategies to help parents support their teenagers through stress and pressure, particularly during demanding academic periods.
Helping your Teen Achieve Financial Wellbeing with Lacey Filipich
Parents: you can raise a financially capable teen even if you don’t feel confident with money. In this short talk on financial wellbeing, Lacey will cover three essential money chats to have with your teen so they can achieve financial wellbeing, and how to have them even if your teen prefers communicating via text message or grunting.
Supporting Your Child Through Academic Pressures: Warning Signs & Practical Strategies with Fiona Tholet
Academic pressure affects many students at selective schools, but how do you know if your child is experiencing healthy challenge or harmful stress? In this practical session, learn to recognise the warning signs that your child may be struggling, and gain evidence-based strategies you can use immediately at home. We'll cover the homework dilemma (when to help, when to step back), language that builds resilience rather than increases pressure, practical approaches to managing perfectionism, and when to reach out to school for support. Leave with concrete tools to help your child thrive academically while maintaining their wellbeing.
This session is designed to be practical, relatable, and grounded in the real experiences of JCCA students and families.

Her most recent focus is the impact of climate disruption on wealth, which she believes is the greatest threat to our financial futures.
