Masterclass: Supporting Older Autistic Adults

This masterclass aims to provide you with a deeper insight into the characteristics and experiences of older autistic people; the challenges they face in the community and in accessing services; and how we can create more inclusive environments and provide more supportive and neuro-affirming care.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Identify key challenges faced by older autistic adults
- Understand the knowledge and service gaps in providing care for older autistic adults
- Describe how current mental health and aged care environments and practices may be inaccessible to older autistic adults
- Suggest modifications to mental health and aged care environments and practices to make them more accessible and inclusive for older autistic adults
- Reflect on their own practices and suggest one thing they could do differently to better minimise the barriers and/or utilise the strengths of autistic adults
FACILITATOR
Sandra Thom-Jones, MBA, MPH, PhD is an autistic author, academic and advocate. She is the author of Growing in to Autism (MUP, 2022; 2025), Autistics in Academia (Cambridge University Press, 2025), and Autistics at Work (MUP, 2025). Sandra worked for more than two decades in the university sector as a researcher and senior leader, most recently as Pro Vice-Chancellor, Research Impact. She now works as a consultant providing a range of services for autistic people, as well as research and consultancy services for education, employment and healthcare providers.
Sandra has undertaken numerous research projects in partnership with the autistic community on the experiences of autistic people, and the knowledge and attitudes towards autism in the broader community; including research that won the Autism CRC’s 2019 and 2021 awards for research translation and 2022 award for inclusive research.
