Cycle C Module 2: Law and Grace (2026)
About
Thomas considers law and grace to be the two external sources of human actions, and he covers them in the last sections of Prima Secundae (questions 90 to 108 and 109 to 114 respectively). Although the sections appear distinct, because Thomas says that the New Law is the grace of the Holy Spirit, the first section flows smoothly into the second. This module will also consider three other questions that have a special relevance: I.43, on the missions of the divine persons, which says that the invisible mission of the Holy Spirit is identical with the reception of sanctifying grace, and II-II.106-107 which deal with the virtue of gratitude and the opposing vice of ingratitude: Thomas notes that gratitude can also be called gratia, and it is here that we see the human analogue of the divine reality we simply call "grace."
