Just 50km from Melbourne, barely an hour by car, the Macedon Ranges remains one of Victoria’s most compelling and understated wine regions.
You won’t see it all at once. The vineyards are folded into undulating hills, scattered across elevations from 300 to 800 metres above sea level. The terrain twists and rises, concealing as much as it reveals. That sense of discovery is part of the region’s charm.
Altitude defines the climate. This is mainland Australia’s coolest viticultural zone, with the capacity to produce some of the country’s finest sparkling wines. But sparkling is only part of the story.
Across more than 35 wineries, Pinot Noir often stands as the flagship variety. Beyond that, the range is impressively diverse: Chardonnay, Shiraz, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon all find expression here. Despite this diversity, the climate brings coherence.
The wines are typically aromatic and finely structured. Alcohol levels are moderate. Tannins are refined. Oak, where used, is restrained. Natural acidity is the defining thread preserving freshness and carrying flavour long through the palate.
This is a region of subtlety, precision and quiet confidence.
