Self-drive and Talks at Kelly House, Beveridge
About
Kelly House in Beveridge, Victoria, is the former childhood home of infamous bushranger Ned Kelly. Built c.1860 by his father John Kelly, it was originally a three-room home with additions made in the latter half of the nineteenth century by the Stewart family. Considered a rare example of vernacular timber cottage construction based on Irish principles, Kelly House is of archaeological, architectural and historic significance to the State of Victoria. After falling into a state of disrepair, the property was purchased by the government in 2019.
The property was restored in 2022 by Heritage Victoria and includes interpretive signage around the perimeter of the property.
The revitalised gardens were designed by GbLA Landscape Architects which features a low-impact design, incorporating native species that thrive in varied conditions.
We have been fortunate to obtain access to the Kelly House which is normally restricted. Annette Warner from GbLA Landscape Architects, the lead landscape architect of the gardens has kindly agreed to talk to us about the garden design and Mark Huntersmith from GML Heritage will talk about the restoration of the house.
After the tour and talks, we will drive to the Beveridge Community Centre (Hall) for refreshments. Tim Gatehouse (committee member) will give a talk about 'The bushranger, the artist and the philanthropist' i.e. Ned Kelly, Ellis Rowan and Janet, Lady Clarke.
PLEASE NOTE: At the Kelly House you should be prepared for uneven ground as the surrounding roads and footpaths are unmade. Please also note that there is no seating (including BYO chairs) or toilet facilities within the Kelly House or garden. Limited space for chairs is available outside the fence if you need to rest during the talks. Toilet facilities are available at the Beverage Recreation Reserve before the talks or at the Beveridge Community Centre (Hall) after the talks during refreshments.
