HEADLINE PERFORMERS -Saoirse (Gaelic word for freedom) are a vibrant vocal and dance group from Melbourne. Saoirse delight their audiences with their beautiful renditions of traditional Irish ballads and original works, they will join hands to offer some spirited jigs and reels to get your feet tapping.
Saoirse have performed at some great festivals including the Port Fairy Folk Festival, Brunswick Music Festival, the National Folk Festival, and many other music venues throughout Australia.
PROGRAM OF LOCAL PERFORMERS
Frederick Kelly (Tenor) is a highly competent and experienced tenor. Over the years he has sung leading roles in Viennese light opera in Melbourne, as well as special events at Saint Patrick's Cathedral there. On moving to Bendigo, he joined the CVIA and has sung at all our Saint Patrick's Day concert and our commemorative concerts. Frederick has also sung at Bendigo Irish Association (now folded) concerts and CVIA concerts to honour Irish singers and musicians who visited Australia during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Bryan Milne (Baritone) of Bendigo is a young singer of much promise. He has sung at all the CVIA's major event concerts and semi productions for the past twelve years. Bryan passed with high results the singing examinations of the renowned Trinity College of Music, London, up to and including Grade 8 level. Both Frederick Kelly and Bryan Milne will be singing the leading roles in the excerpt from the oratorio 'Saint Patrick at Tara' at our forthcoming concert.
Meryl Wilkinson is a leading Bendigo professional harpist and traditional Celtic singer. She has performed throughout much of north west Victoria, and is much in demand as a performer in our region. Meryl has performed at Celtic and folk festivals, including the Portarlington Celtic festival, the Kilmore Celtic festival, and the Castlemaine State festival. She also featured regularly in CVIA concerts and semi-productions. She has released two CDs -' Cruidh mo Chridh (Harp of my Heart)' and 'A Potpourri of Harp and Song".
Raziel Gutierrez Soto. Originally from Mexico, Raziel is a professional classical guitar soloist, based in Castlemaine. His style encompasses classical, Spanish, Latin American, and Irish music. He is also an accomplished composer of music for classical guitar. Raziel has released two CDs - 'High Time Busking' and 'Promising Times'.
John Clancy of Bendigo is an accomplished pianist and singer. He has sung in the chorus and has had minor principal roles in light and grand opera in England, Ireland, Hong Kong, and Australia. John sings in the Irish language, as well as in Spanish, and has recently taken up, with Raziel Gutierrez Soto, the singing of Portuguese Fado. In 2013 John produced the CD 'The Minstrel and the Swan: Australia Commemorate Two Great Irish Artistes - William Vincent Wallace and Catherine Hayes'. John Clancy is the author of the recently published historical novel, 'A Bard on the Pampas: A Story of Irish Migration to Argentina'.
The O’Shea Ryan Academy of Irish Dance continues the long tradition of dance here in Bendigo. Established by Geraldine Ryan in 1947 the academy gives rural children and parents the opportunity to explore their Irish heritage through the joy of dance but also to keep fit, healthy and active in an inclusive and fun environment.
Local girl Lauren Bonora has stepped into the role of teacher and organiser of the academy and is committed to providing performance opportunities to all who wish to participate. A delight to behold and will make a wonderful addition to our St Patricks Day concert.
