🎬 Building Momentum Through Crowdfunding with Ravi Chand
About
After our opening session explored how short films can begin with minimal resources, this event looks at the next step: how projects are supported and financed. Many filmmakers assume funding must come first. In practice, early projects are often made possible by the community around them — when filmmakers know how to communicate their idea clearly and invite support in a professional way.Filmmaker and producer Ravi Chand will share a practical breakdown of how a crowdfunding campaign works in real terms, based on the strategies he used to successfully fund his VCA short films across consecutive years. His graduating film Coconut was later presented through Creative Australia’s MatchLab initiative as a crowdfunding case study.
This session focuses on practical, usable steps rather than theory.
• How a crowdfunding campaign actually functions from start to finish
• Planning a timeline and outreach strategy
• Building supporters before launch
• Running a campaign with a small (or no) team
• Choosing the right crowdfunding platform
• Reward design and managing time commitments
• Asking for support in a professional and comfortable way
• Social media during a campaign
• What happens after the campaign ends
• Managing energy, expectations and mental health during a live campaign
Who this is for?
Emerging and early-career filmmakers, writers, directors and producers who have an idea they want to move toward production.
No prior experience is required. If you have a project you care about but aren’t sure how to finance it, this session is designed to give you clear starting points.
