The Lane Cove Historical Society is excited to announce a Writing Workshop taking place on Monday, 20th April 2026 at 6pm at Lane Cove Library.
This workshop is designed for students and history enthusiasts keen to refine their writing skills and learn more about the Lane Cove History Prize.
Whether you are planning to enter the competition or simply want to improve your essay technique, the session will provide practical tips, guidance on structuring historical essays, and inspiration from past winners. It's a great opportunity to connect with fellow history buffs and discover the rich heritage of Lane Cove. This year the session will also provide guidance in the production of oral histories.

About the Presenters:
Catherine Briggs
Catherine was a librarian in Victoria in municipal, corporate and medical libraries. In London, she worked as a librarian for the Inner London Education Authority.
Afterwards, she studied antiques at the Victoria & Albert Museum, then undertook ceramic restoration courses in Norfolk and Chelsea. Returning to Australia, she had her own antiques business in Melbourne before completing further degrees and becoming a teacher of English. In Sydney she taught for years at various schools, edited literary journals, was a senior HSC marker, completed an AFTRS media course and film making at Metro and published books of poetry.
Last year she completed TAFE Certificate IV in Cultural and Arts Administration and is currently Vice-President of the Lane Cove Historical Society.
Jane Van Balen
Jane is a professional librarian and has been employed supporting researchers at University level for over 25 years. She is currently a Faculty Librarian at Macquarie University.
Her past employment included 8 years at the National Film and Sound Archive in Canberra, working with various parts of the collection focusing on Sound recordings and Collection Development. One of her special projects was co-ordinating the Oral History program providing support for Oral Historians.
Jane is the current Secretary of Lane Cove Historical Society and in 2023 won the Lane Cove History Prize. She has researched and written several family history accounts.
