A Thousand Years of Haggadot with Professor Jonathan Shaw (CANCELLED)
The haggadah (pl. haggadot) is the central text of the Passover festival. Grounding the Seder meal with traditions of storytelling and song, the haggadah has been a vehicle of Jewish creativity for generations. Join Professor Jonathan Shaw as he unpacks the layered art, language and social commentary embedded within these diverse texts. From the fragile, thousand-year-old manuscripts of the Cairo Genizah to the refined artistic traditions of Europe, consider how the haggadah has continually reflected Jewish life, imagination and identity.
Jonathan Shaw is the Deputy Director of Clinical Science at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, where his research focuses on epidemiology and clinical research in diabetes. He is also a Professor in the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Monash University, Professor in the School of Life Sciences, La Trobe University and a consultant physician in the diabetes services. He also teaches Jewish classes and researches the history of Jewish text with leading libraries and institutions worldwide.
