About
These hands-on bike maintenance workshops will help you identify the squeaks and creaks your bike is making, give you the confidence to maintain your bike and to know when you need a professional.
What's making that squeaking noise?
Join one of these fun interactive workshops where you'll learn how to identify the different parts of your bike, what makes them work (or not), what you can do at home to keep them working and when to call a professional!
Two session types are available - one for general bikes (all bike types), and one specifically for Mountain Bikes (MTB). Please read the session details below and ensure you book into the correct session for your bike type and interests.
For 13yo upwards (u18 to be accompanied by a parent/guardian).
This course is commissioned by the Knox City Council and delivered by the professionals from Bike it Better.
GENERAL BIKE MAINTENANCE

MOUNTAIN BIKE (MTB) SPECIFIC BIKE MAINTENANCE

Who is this session suitable for?
- Anyone interested in learning to maintain and perform basic repairs and safety checks on their bike or their kids' bikes.
- For 13yo upwards (teenagers to be accompanied by an adult).
- Participants MUST live, work or study within Knox City Council.
What we'll be covering in the General Basic Bike Maintenance workshop:
- ABCD check: the essential safety check before every ride. Practivce on your own bike!
- What part is that? - putting a name to the different parts of your bike.
- Getting comfortable: how to set your seat at the correct height and other adjustments you can make.
- What to do when you get a flat tyre; the essentials to carry when riding, how to replace a tube or patch it!
- How to adjust your brakes, replace worn brake pads, and know when to take it in for repair.
- What to do if your chain comes off during a ride.
- How to clean and maintain your chain and gears, and when to take it for a service. Chain lube: what type is best, how to correctly use it, and how often.
- Your questions; we'll have time for participants to work on their own bike, ask questions and get assistance and advice regarding safety checks and maintenance issues.
What we'll be covering in the MOUNTAIN BIKE (MTB) SPECIFIC BIKE MAINTENANCE workshop
- ABCD check: the essential safety check before every ride. Participants practice on own bike.
- Bike fit: how to set your seat at the correct height, and other adjustment related issues.
- Disc Brakes: how they work, adjustments, cleaning/decontamination (fix that dreaded squeak or squeal), and pad replacement.
- Inner tube replacement / Tubeless tyre plugs: what to do when you get a flat tyre, and what essentials to carry when riding.
- Chain/drive-train clean and re-lube: how to clean and maintain your chain and gears, and when to take it for a service.
- Chain lube: different types available, how to correctly use it, and how often.
- Suspension Setup: why it matters, how to set the pressure, rebound and compression dampening, and how to tell when they need servicing.
- Tubeless Tyres: pros and cons, how to maintain, tips for setting up, and setting tyre pressures.
- Your questions; we'll have time for participants to work on their own bike, ask questions and get assistance and advice regarding safety checks and maintenance issues.
These are hands-on workshops so bring your favourite bike with you and get your hands dirty with our guidance!
What should I bring?
- Bring your bike so that you can learn to feel comfortable working on it and ask questions specific to your ride!
- If bringing your own bike, please ensure your bike is clean (in particular the wheels), to avoid making a mess in our indoor venue.
- Don't worry if getting your bike there is too hard, you'll still be able to get the knowledge you want from the class.
- Our instructors will have tool kits with them which you may use during the session, however feel free to bring your own tools to use on your own bike, or obtain assistance in learning how to use them. Please note that any shared tools will need to be wiped with disinfectant after each use.
What is the start/finish time?
The program will take place at the times listed at the top of this page.
Please arrive 5-10 minutes early so you can sign in, get comfy and won't be interrupting after we get started.
Electric Bikes - these particular workshops will not cover any issues specific to electric bikes. You are welcome to bring an electric bike compliant with current Victorian regulations if you are interested in learning about basic general bike maintenance.
